The short answer

Can you change accountants mid-year?

Direct answer

Yes. You can switch accountants at any point during the tax year. There is no requirement to wait until year end. AccTek reviews all outstanding deadlines and ensures no compliance gaps during the transition. Most transfers complete within 5 working days.

Many business owners stay with an underperforming accountant because they believe switching is complicated or risky. It is neither. The process is governed by professional regulations that protect you, and AccTek manages every step on your behalf.

Common triggers

Why businesses change accountants

You only hear from them at year endA good accountant should be proactive throughout the year — not just reactive when deadlines arrive.
No tax planning or strategic adviceIf your accountant files returns but never suggests ways to reduce your tax bill, you are paying for compliance without value.
Slow response timesWaiting days or weeks for a reply to a straightforward question is not acceptable when HMRC deadlines are involved.
Still using desktop software or paperIf your accountant has not moved to cloud accounting, you are missing real-time visibility and paying for inefficiency.
Fees keep increasing without explanationHourly billing creates unpredictable costs. AccTek charges fixed monthly fees — you know exactly what you pay.
You have outgrown their expertiseThe accountant who was fine at £50K turnover may not have the capability for £500K. Growth demands more sophisticated support.
How it works

How to change accountants — the 5-step process

AccTek manages the entire transition. You do not need to contact your previous accountant or chase paperwork.

1

Engage AccTek

Get your instant quote or book a free consultation. We agree your service scope, sign the engagement letter and you are officially an AccTek client.

2

Professional clearance

AccTek sends a formal clearance letter to your previous accountant. Professional regulations require them to respond and confirm there are no reasons we should not act for you. This typically takes 3–5 working days.

3

Records transfer

Your previous accountant provides prior year accounts, tax returns, trial balances and any outstanding correspondence. Your records belong to you — they cannot withhold them (except their own working papers).

4

System setup & migration

AccTek sets up Xero, imports your data, connects bank feeds, verifies opening balances and registers as your HMRC agent. If you are already on Xero, we review and optimise your existing setup.

5

Ongoing management

Your dedicated AccTek accountant takes over. Monthly bookkeeping, tax planning, compliance filings and responsive support — all included in your fixed monthly fee. No disruption, no gaps.

Will my current accountant be notified?

Yes — this is a standard professional requirement, not a courtesy. AccTek sends a formal clearance letter to your existing accountant as required by their professional body. The letter asks two things:

  1. Are there any professional reasons why we should not accept appointment?
  2. Please provide the client’s records and prior year documentation.

In the vast majority of cases, the response is straightforward and records are transferred within days. In rare cases where an outgoing accountant is uncooperative, AccTek escalates through the relevant professional body. Your records belong to you — they cannot be held hostage.

What happens to my accounting software?

Xero is included in every AccTek plan at no additional cost. You get real-time visibility, automated bank feeds and MTD compliance built in.

Frequently asked questions

How do I switch accountants?

Sign up with AccTek, provide your current accountant’s details and we handle everything — professional clearance, HMRC agent authorisation, records transfer, Xero setup and ongoing management. Most transitions complete within 5 working days.

Can I change accountants mid-year?

Yes. You can switch at any point during the tax year with no requirement to wait until year end. AccTek reviews outstanding deadlines and ensures no compliance gaps during the transition.

Will my current accountant cause problems?

Professional regulations require outgoing accountants to respond to clearance letters and release your records. In rare cases of non-cooperation, AccTek escalates through the relevant professional body. Your records belong to you.

What records will I need to provide?

AccTek needs your last filed accounts, prior year tax returns, HMRC correspondence and software login details. We obtain most of this directly from your outgoing accountant through the clearance process.

Will switching delay my tax return or VAT filing?

No, when managed properly. AccTek reviews all outstanding deadlines, confirms filing status and obtains HMRC agent authorisation before your previous engagement formally ends. We never let a deadline slip during transition.

Are there any fees for changing accountants?

Your current accountant may charge for work already completed. AccTek does not charge a transfer or setup fee — onboarding, Xero migration and professional clearance are all included in your monthly plan.
